The Benefits of Environmentally-Friendly Ice Melters

Corgi running through the snow.

Do you use ice melters to keep your property safe in the winter? The regular use of ice melters can most definitely help to keep your sidewalk, walkways and driveway safe for pedestrians, but what about furry four-legged creatures and the landscape that they walk on? Pets and wildlife walk over these ice melters, which can put their health at risk, not to mention the landscape that you worked so hard to perfect in the spring and summer seasons. To keep your landscape, pets and wildlife around your home safe, consider using environmentally-friendly and pet-friendly ice melters this season.

Sensitive Paws

While Canadian wildlife such as raccoons and squirrels may have tougher paws, common pets such as dogs and cats are often more sensitive. Ice melt products can have a negative effect on their delicate paws. Walking over ice melt products can result in pain, stinging and other irritations.

When a pet-friendly ice melter is used, you can rest assured that their delicate paws won’t be affected negatively. To ensure their health when venturing away from your home, consider purchasing a set of boots or mitts for your pet. Although they may not enjoy them at first, your pet will most definitely thank you for keeping their sensitive paws safe.

Dangers of Ingestion

Some pets and wildlife just can’t seem to help themselves when it comes to eating something that they shouldn’t be. Ice melt products are unfortunately one of those things for some animals. Whether they have a taste while outside or lick their paws when they get home, ingesting some of these products have the potential to cause harm.

While it’s unlikely that your pet will consume enough of an ice melt product to cause harm, that doesn’t go to say that some of the chemicals won’t still have an adverse effect, if only temporary.

Some signs that your pet may have consumed an ice melt product include:

  • Drooling
  • Vomiting
  • Loss of appetite
  • Disorientation
  • Increased water consumption

If you suspect that your pet consumed an ice melt product and/or is displaying any of the symptoms above, bring them to your closest veterinarian immediately. With or without a pet-friendly ice melt product, it is recommended that you closely monitor them when not in the home and wipe down their paws after each walk. This can help to ensure their safety and wellbeing at all times.
